The best time to cruise the Caribbean for most people is December to April: the dry season, with lower humidity and the lowest chance of storms. But ships sail every week of the year, and each season has its own trade-offs between weather, crowds and price.
| Period | Weather | Crowds and fares |
|---|---|---|
| December to mid-April | Dry season; warm days, cooler nights, steady trade winds. | Peak demand, especially holidays and spring break. |
| Late April to May | Warmer; still mostly dry. | Often quieter, with good value. |
| June to July | Hot and humid; hurricane season has begun, but storms are less common. | Summer holidays bring families. |
| August to October | Hottest, wettest months; peak of hurricane season. | Usually the lowest demand of the year. |
| November | Season ends 30 November; conditions improve through the month. | Thanksgiving week is busy. |
Season dates come from the National Hurricane Center climatology pages.
Eastern, Western or Southern?

The month also helps you choose a route. Western Caribbean itineraries (Cozumel, Belize, Roatán, Grand Cayman, Jamaica) are short sails from Florida, Texas and New Orleans. Eastern routes (St. Thomas, St. Maarten, San Juan) usually leave from Florida’s Atlantic ports. Southern Caribbean routes (Aruba, Curaçao, Barbados, St. Lucia) are farther away and often leave from San Juan or Barbados, or run as longer cruises from Florida. Our sister sites Western Caribbean Cruises, Eastern Caribbean Cruises and Southern Caribbean Cruises cover each, and Caribbean Cruise Ports goes port by port.
Sailing in Hurricane Season
Ships have a big advantage over hotels in a storm: they can move. Cruise lines watch forecasts constantly and will reroute, swap ports or adjust the schedule to avoid bad weather. That means your itinerary might change, but your safety is not left to chance. If you sail between June and November:
- Buy travel insurance that covers trip interruption and missed connections, and read what it says about named storms.
- Fly in a day early, and keep your plans in port flexible.
- Consider the southern islands, which sit outside the main storm track.
- Expect heat and occasional heavy showers, even without a storm.
