The Best Time to Cruise Alaska, Month by Month
The best time to cruise Alaska depends on what you want most: long days, warmer weather, wildlife, lower fares or quieter ports. The season is short, roughly May to September, and each month has its own character.
| Month | What it is like | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| May | Cool and often dry; snow still on the mountains; ports are quiet. | Value, fewer people, crisp scenery. |
| June | Very long days; the season is in full swing; wildflowers. | Sightseeing from the deck late into the evening. |
| July | Usually the warmest month and the busiest; families sail during school holidays. | Warmer shore days, family trips. |
| August | Still warm, but often wetter; salmon runs draw bears to the rivers. | Wildlife, fishing. |
| September | Cooler, wetter, autumn color; darker nights. | Fewer crowds, a chance of northern lights. |
Weather in Southeast Alaska is changeable in every month. Pack waterproof layers whatever you book.
What Changes Through the Season

Wildlife
Whales feed in Alaskan waters all summer. Bears are most visible when salmon runs fill the rivers, typically mid to late summer. Bald eagles are seen all season.
Glaciers
Glacier days, such as Glacier Bay, Hubbard Glacier or Tracy Arm, run all season. Early in the year there can be more floating ice, which occasionally limits how close ships can get to some glaciers.
Inside Passage or Gulf of Alaska?
Round trips from Seattle or Vancouver sail the Inside Passage and usually call at Juneau, Ketchikan and Skagway, with a glacier day. One-way Gulf of Alaska cruises run between Vancouver and Seward or Whittier, near Anchorage, and are often combined with a land tour to Denali. Our sister site Cruise Destination Guide’s Alaska page compares the routes in detail, and Alaska Port Excursions covers the shore excursions port by port.
Booking timing
Alaska cabins, especially balconies on the scenic side for one-way cruises, are often booked well ahead. Many people reserve a year or more in advance for July. Fares tend to be most attractive at the very start and end of the season. For the year’s best offers, watch the January-to-March promotions on Wave Season.
Best Time to Cruise Alaska: Questions
What is the best month to cruise Alaska?
There is no single best month. June and July offer the longest days and warmest weather, May and September offer fewer people and often lower fares, and August is busy and can be wetter. Choose by what matters most to you.
When is the Alaska cruise season?
Large cruise ships sail to Alaska from about May to September, with a few sailings at the very start or end of that window. Small expedition ships follow a similar season.
Can you see the northern lights on an Alaska cruise?
It is possible but uncommon on the Inside Passage, because summer nights are short. The chance is better on late-season sailings in September, when nights are darker, and on land tours farther north.
